My Thoughts On Bullying

Bullying has happened for as long as I can remember. Since elementary, it was nature to pick on somebody else if they were different or acted a funny way. Of course it wasn't severe back in the days. I mean, its only a bunch of 4-year-olds to 10-year-olds that are being a little mean to one another. The sad part is that it starts at such a young age; one day, one kid decided that they didn't like somebody because they had a different hair color or weird shoes or even because of the way they talked. And because they didn't like that specific thing about them, they decided to humiliate that kid. I usually tend to believe that if you were bullied, eventually you become the bully because you're tired of being picked on. The cycle keeps going because its seen as a joke or it doesn't seem to matter enough to address that situation. In high school, I can honestly say that I hardly see bullying happen. The only major bullying that I have seen is people harassing homosexuals, bisexuals, lesbians, or gays. That's a touchy topic, but it seems to be the one people get most offended talking about. To accuse or assume that one person is gay in high school can often turn into a fight. It seems like such a horrible thing to say about somebody; when a rumor like that turns out false, perhaps others that are actually gay become offended. It's honestly too big of a problem because everybody has different beliefs so its hard to solve it. As far as ending bullying in high school, I don't think it ever will end. It's not something you can turn off like a switch. To end it, you have to change everybody's beliefs so that everybody agrees. The morals of every single person are different and just because anti-bullying posters are posted around school doesn't mean its going to stop. Now the problem isn't critical to the point where the authorities need to come into the picture, but all the school can really do is be positive and promote good behavior. To end bullying means that a kid will never learn to hate. While hate is an ugly emotion, everybody eventually feels that towards somebody; it is inevitable. Kids learn that sharing toys is good but they are greedy and turn to bullying each other for the most or better toys. It's a cruel thing that bullying is however it is also something that can't be fully stopped. It can be monitored and controlled; I believe it can be kept to a minimum. For that to happen, there needs to be more interaction among students instead of everybody sticking with their cliques. We are afraid to be with others because we are afraid of differences, but if we talked more to each other, I think we could improve that problem.

My Favorite Movie

My favorite movie is (500) Days of Summer. Besides the exquisite soundtrack that the movie offers, the story happens to switch the roles of the guy breaking a girl's heart and instead the girl is the heartbreaker. The protagonist, Tom Hansen, is very into the idea of finding your soulmate and falling in love. His love interest, Summer Finn, does not share this belief and I actually end up hating and loving her character at the end. Hating because she literally rips apart Tom's heart; loving her because she is honest about why it didn't work out with Tom. This film was released in 2009 and I currently own two copies of the movie. I never get tired of watching this movie because I can relate to the expectations and reality that Tom experiences in the movie. My favorite scene is when Summer and Tom stop seeing each other and Tom is going through the pain of a broken heart; in the scene, he's lying face down on his bed and playing with a tennis ball. He keeps attempting to bounce it and fails every time until finally he gets the rythym going and this symbolizes how he's getting his life back together. He then starts to focus on his dream of being an architect and reads a ton of books. The soundtrack is also one of the biggest parts of why this movie stands out so much to me. Apart from having French and alternative artists, the movie introduced me to one of my favorite artists Regina Spektor. Her sweet voice and the piano in her music is both the best and saddest music I've ever heard. She has a song in the movie called "Hero" and it plays in the background when Tom goes to see Summer after a long time of not seeing her. He has all these expectations in his head of the perfect evening; everything falls into place in his imagination. However, reality can hurt when it doesn't go your way. Tom sees Summer showing off an engagement ring to her friend; Tom doesn't even get angry. He storms out of the rooftop where the party is held and into the dark streets of Downtown LA. The music goes extremely well with that scene and I can't even begin to say how much I LOVE the cast. While it is an independent film, it is one of the best I've ever seen.
